Where to Invest?

When I was a kid, my parent told me to invest in real-estate. Why? The number of population in the world is growing while the earth is not growing. Theoretically, the housing real-estate is a sustainable investment.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case. The recent study from S&P/Case-Shiller shows the median housing price in the US dropped very significantly. The composite 10-city index was down 15.3% in the last 1 year. The composite 20-city index was down 14.36%. It sounds really scary, isn’t it?
Where to invest now? How about stock market? Well… the figure below shows the history of Shanghai Composite Index in the last one year. It doesn’t look good either.

I agree that even property investment has a risk and stock market in a bad condition.

SHORT SELL

@thermo: Good suggestion. Unfortunately, I normally don’t try short-selling. The risk is unlimited. Trading options (like buying put) may be another way.

hi,

How about mutual fund. But best investment would be where you can grow your carer why not have your own development house and start your business.

@kshitiz: Mutual fund is also risky. If you read my other posting, http://life.antonypranata.com/2008/05/31/rethinking-my-retirement/, my retirement saving that was invested in mutual funds for 3 years is decreasing. It’s even more worse when I include inflation in the calculation.
