Last weekend, I went to Yale Town, Vancouver for our photography’s field trip. We had to practice using our basic knowledge of photography, such as exposure, depth of field, motion and many others. I share some of the pictures here.
The first picture is about panning motion; basically makes a moving subject looks sharp while other non-moving subjects look blur. It’s not perfect yet; but I’m quite satisfied with the result.
The second picture is selective-focus, that is eliminating the subject from its background. I took a picture of my lovely wife near a high-rise building in Yale Town.
Again… another example of selective focus.

Today, I watched Chinese New Year Parade 2008 in Chinatown Vancouver. It was actually my first time watching Chinese New Year. Yes, my first time… no kidding. Well…. although I am an Indonesian Chinese; I am not a “real Chinese”. I don’t even speak Chinese.
Anyway, I have uploaded some pictures of Vancouver’s Chinese New Year Parade to my Picasa Web Album. I just highlight the interesting ones here. The first one is the picture of Chinatown’s Gate two hours before the parade. Yes, I came 2 hours earlier.
The next one is a picture of me trying to adjust my camera’s settings. Yes… I am still a beginner in photography.
According to Chinese lunar calendar, this year is the year of rat. Not really…. it is the year of Mickie Mouse. Look at this guy holding Mickie Mouse in his hand.
As usual, we always see lions dance and dragon dance in Chinese Near celebration.
And… not to forget… the tradition of red envelopes. The red color of the envelope symbolizes good luck.

I just joined a photography course a couple of weeks ago at Vancouver Photography Workshop. It is really fun…. I always wanted to learn photography. I always want to take better photos. It wasn’t until this year that I can start learning photography.
Anyway, I would like to share some of my assignment photos. Don’t laugh at them. I just bought my DSLR camera before Christmas last year and just joined the course last month.
The first assignment was about EV-compensation; how we can get a proper exposure for our pictures.
The second assignment was about white-balance; how we can match our pictures with the light source.
The third assignment was quite challenging, depth of field; how we can “isolate” an object from the background.
My teacher told me…. If you want to become a photographer, take a photo. If you want to become a good photographer, then take another photo.
